I haven't seen many email born viruses that put themselves in zip files, but
it's not uncommon - almost all the virus checkers out there have settings to
go n depths into zip files (incase a zip file contains a zip file and inside
that is a virus, etc...). You should just get a command line virus scanner
and run that on your emails - I believe McAfee makes one for Unix
environments.

Either

A) some spammer clued in that I have disallowed e-mail with
.pif/.exe/.bat/.com/etc (using the filter from the exim website and
decided to try to send me a virus in a zip file,

or

B) There's actually a new virus out there that puts itself into a zip file
to appear "more safe" to users...

It said "The attachment should explain itself."

Anyone heard of this one?
