I do LDAP lookups for the existance of a recipient in acl_check_rcpt.
But i am using openldap.



   accept  domains   = +local_domains
           endpass
           message   = unknown user
           condition =  ${lookup ldap {ldap:///LDAP_BASE??sub?\
                                       (|(mail=$local_part@$domain)\
                                       (mailalias=$local_part@$domain))\
                                      }{yes}{no}\
                         }
           verify    = recipient
