If mutt is calling exim from the command line, exim's acting as a MUA (I
believe). You can have it ignore the dot by adding -oi to command line
call - like /usr/lib/sendmail -oi -bm -f <from> <to,to>

It mutt's attaching to an SMTO server and sending, it's mutt's fault.
