I really must find the time to update my LDAP, which I use only for
testing Exim, and which I hardly understand :-) from 2.0.25 to 2.1.x,
but I know it will take time, which is why I never seem to get to it.
But it doesn't sound as if the LDAP version makes much difference in
this case.

That's quite OK. As far as LDAP goes, I really do rely on the Exim LDAP
community to tell me what to do. But only the two of you commented on
this issue...
