masta@fastmail ~/hm$ host hotmail.com
hotmail.com has address 64.4.44.7
hotmail.com has address 64.4.53.7
hotmail.com mail is handled (pri=5) by mx4.hotmail.com
hotmail.com mail is handled (pri=5) by mx1.hotmail.com
hotmail.com mail is handled (pri=5) by mx2.hotmail.com
hotmail.com mail is handled (pri=5) by mx3.hotmail.com

masta@fastmail ~/hm$ host mx1.hotmail.com
mx1.hotmail.com has address 65.54.166.99
mx1.hotmail.com has address 65.54.254.129
mx1.hotmail.com has address 65.54.252.99

mx1.hotmail.com resolves to more than one IP-address, exim handles this.
The first host times out, exim tried the next one, and it succeeded.
