I appreciate your time and assistance, Philip. Going through the logs
I see (-44) errors for this host since the 14th, however, I do see
deliveries happening in the midst of all these deferments. Granted,
the machine in question hasn't had the best performance record in the
past, but due to a recent change it is now a lot more reliable.
The answer to your first question is yes, in fact very frequently.
I did a grep for the word "defer", in turn greping _out_ "(-44)", and
have attached the results. What confuses me is that I expect to get
(-44) error if an attempt is made to send another message to this host.
If one of the lines in my attachment is made, that would suggest that
there had been a previous successful delivery.
As for your second question, I am using Exim version 3.34-1, from the
Testing branch of Debian. I plan on upgrading to 4 when it is packaged.
(I see 3.35 is out now, I will upgrade to that asap)
Again, thank you for your time. The most important fact is that the
mail wasn't lost. Now that the SMTP service has a much better uptime,
I'm going to wait and see if the problem manifests itself again. I'm
sure that you, nor I, don't have the time to debug a problem for past
versions of Exim.
