# dig aol.ca mx
[ no mx record ]
# dig aol.ca a
aol.ca. 1068 IN A 64.12.182.235
Ok, your sender-SMTP should connect to port 25 of 64.12.182.235
Using A records for mail isnt recommended, but many sites still use
them, and exims default routers will use them. If you choose to ignore
them, then you will not be able to mail to aol.ca and any other domains
which are setup like this. This is either your problem or their problem,
depending on who is more interested in the mail going through.
If the host at that IP address is down or not accepting SMTP
connections, then mail for aol.ca is as effectively down as if there was
one MX record for the domain pointing at that host.
If that is not the correct host that mail for aol.ca should go to, then
whoever runs that domains should correct their DNS (preferrably by using
MX records, but listing the IP of the correct host would be valid as
well)
The DNS may or may not be broken, but there shouldn'd be anything
special in your MTA needing to be done for that domain unless aol.ca is
_your_ domain or you provide mail service for it.
