From RFC2821, p. 5:
"Once the transmission channel is established and initial handshaking
completed, the SMTP client normally initiates a mail transaction."
From RFC2821, p. 14:
"An SMTP session is initiated when a client opens a connection to a
server and the server responds with an opening message."
The RFC in question proceeds roughly from the point in time where an
SMTP connection has been established and the server responds with a 220
message. The initial "handshaking" is not covered. If you believe
otherwise, please cite the specific passage, as I have done.
