Presumably because the far end isn't responding with an OK quickly

1. Try increasing final_timeout in the smtp transport. It defaults to 10
minutes. Make it 20 and see what happens. I suspect this will not make
any difference, but if it does, then you just have some very slow
receiver hosts out there.
2. Otherwise, you may need to use some kind of network snooper to see
exactly what packets are being sent on the network.
3. You could first try a delivery with -d9 set, just to verify that it
is timing out at the end of the message.
