Hopefully Jan realized you meant externally..

Basically, if the 'world' (eg, the Internet) needs to be able to deliver
mail to this domain, there must be a DNS server set up listing a valid
MX record for it.

If this mail system is supposed to operate entrirely disconnected from
the Internet, then you can probably cruft together something that will
work without DNS - but why? The whole existance of "domains" is related
to "Domain Name Service".. Its like trying to operate a telephone system
without a telephone switch.

Now, nothing says you have to make this DNS publically visible,...
