if you didn't have the exim pam module (see archives), it couldn't
possibly have worked ever (unless you're not using shadow passwords
and/or you're keeping your exim run as root, which i don't think you
do). but then, maybe that rh7.1 rpm already includes that above said
pam module, in which case i have no idea :)

this just looks as if you were not using that pam module.
