nsswitch.conf is a solaris thing that has been copied in some newer
linux systems; the typical format for hosts in this file is:
hosts: files nisplus nis dns
ted is refering, i think, to a variant on resolv.conf which appears on
other un*x systems there is a fair bit of variation from OS to OS on
this. functions like specifying the ordering of lookups are subsumed
by the nsswitch mechanism on solaris influenced systems, and so
disappear from resolv.conf
