Furthermore, there is a tool kit built on the c-client that provides

tmail (to be used as a c-client MDA)
dmail (to be used as a c-client users mail filer (for things like user
mail filters, etc))

These will ensure c-client mbx compatibility.

It is worth looking at the things in the doc directory that come with
UW-imap. Included is a rant against maildir.
