either recompile mailman to run as the same user as exim runs as,
(--with-mailman-uid=<exim-uid> --with-mailman-gid=<exim-gid>) , or
reconfigure exim to handle mailman as shown in
http://www.exim.org/howto/mailman.html

if you setup exim as shown in the howto you don't need to modify any alias
list (/etc/aliases). exim extracts the addresses from the mailman
directories.

here's a sample config file:

        - randall s. ehren -=- 805 893-5632
           system administrator -=- isber.ucsb.edu
        institute for social, behavioral, and economic research
         randall.cell@???
