That really is a configuration issue with UW imapd and ipopd, not an
issue with the MBX format. The idea was to provide backward compatibility
for MTAs that could only deliver to mbox files, or for sites that wanted
to move gradually from mbox to mbx as the UW daemons would do all the work
for you. You can (and should) deliver mail right into the MBX folders if
you want a pure MBX solution.
