On the novice front, I forgot one other thing.

The command line, its options, and different usages definitely needs a
guide (a guide to the guide?).

The list of options is massive, and some pointers would really help. Also,
the options seem to be organized into categories (e.g., all options
starting with -b do x), but it wasn't clear to me what they were (perhaps
just because there are some exceptions).
