If you have a computer that is connected to the Internet, it is a "host".
That's what the word means.
Most people that download mail that is stored on an ISP's server use POP
or IMAP user agents; it's only those that want more sophisticated
features that run fetchmail and a local MTA. Needless to say, Exim
wasn't designed for this job (though it can do it).

This would, I think, have been easier if you *hadn't* taken a packaged
version, because you might have learned more of what you need to know by
starting from scratch.

Unfortunately, as the Debian version still seems to be 2.x you will have
to jump another hurdle, as there were incompatible configuration changes
between the 2.x releases and the 3.x releases. The 3.x releases have
been out for well over a year:
