I'm not sure Exim beats qmail a lot in performance. As far as I
know, Exim's performance does not differ greatly from qmail's,
unless you work for Planet.

The code is indeed well written. This, and the fact that Exim is
very configurable and as easy to manage as a very configurable
MTA may be, are the reasons I use Exim.
And to answer the original question: Yes, Exim is secure and
reliable.
