Try Forte Agent (
http://www.forteinc.com/). It's not free, but I like
it. You have quite a lot features but non which are not needed. It
completely misses stuff like html mail and so on. It's $29. I got it
years (something like v0.5x..:-)) and never had to pay for updates.
It's now at 1.8. There is a limited time trial available on their
server. It does news too.
