I had been toying with the idea of implementing an operation like Perl's
substitution operator s/xxxx/yyyy/g and this seems to be a good use
for this more general facility. So I'll do it. It will be called "sg"
for "substitute globally" and you will be able to write
${if pam{$1:${sg{$2}{:}{::}}{1}{0}}
