general DNS rules for host names are in RFC 952, with minor changes in RFC
1123. the RFC 952 rules are pretty much the same as the RFC 821 rules. RFC
1123 makes one modest change, in that it permits a digit to be the first
character in a <name>, whereas RFC 821 and RFC 952 restrict the first
character in a <name> to a letter. RFC 1123 explicitly references RFC 952
when it describes this change (page 13, section 2.1), but neglects to
mention RFC 821.
