To respond to my own question, I "think" I've found where my problem lies.
Could someone confirm?
First of all, regretably the original example above is *after* I made a
change which appears to have fixed my problem.
My host_accept_relay included TWO files, "friendly_nets" (IPs) and
"friendly_hosts" (FQDNs)
Since exim had to resolve the friendly_hosts, it appears that it enforced
reverse-DNS on even the friendly_nets. Once I removed "friendly_hosts"
from the configure line, relaying was permitted.
Is my reasoning for my original problem correct?
