hi,
just having a go at the latest exim test (3.036) with asmtp, i have
tried to get a few client mail progs working with different authentication
types and there seems to be a few problem.. although im not sure if these
are problems with exim or the various "quality" windows clients i have
tried.

Pegasus Mail : Win-P-Mail. ver: 3.12a

This one seems to want to use CRAM-MD5 and wont recognise PLAIN or LOGIN
authentication methods. There seems to be a problem with the format of the
username/CRAM-MD5 digest of the challenge string/password response that
the client sends back to the server after the initial challenge string is
sent by the server.

heres an example using the ph10/secret test login and pass:

S: 220 db.noc.u-net.net ESMTP Exim 3.036 #1 Thu, 23 Sep 1999 16
C: EHLO smallman\r\n
S: 250-db.noc.u-net.net Hello smallman [195.102.252.49]\r\n250-SI
C: AUTH CRAM-MD5\r\n
S: 334 PDQzMy45MzgxMDIyMDRAZGIubm9jLnUtbmV0Lm5ldD4=\r\n
C: cGgxMCA4OTg1MjBiYTk0ZDcwMDZhYjIxNTFhMTMwN2EzYjMyMg==\r\n
S: 535 Incorrect authentication data\r\n
C: QUIT\r\n
S: 221 db.noc.u-net.net closing connection\r\n

the exim config is a straight copy/paste from the NewStuff example.. and
yes, i did type in the username/pass into winpmail correctly and in
lower case.

Outlook Express 5 :

This client only seems to want to talk with AUTH LOGIN, however im not
sure if it understands the base64 encoded prompts, or what prompts it
actually wants - if any at all.

S: 250-mailservername Hello remoteserver [ip address here]
S: 250-SIZE
S: 250-PIPELINING
S: 250-AUTH CRAM-MD5 PLAIN LOGIN
S: 250 HELP
C: AUTH LOGIN <-- outlook asks for auth login
S: 334 VXNlcm5hbWU= <-- server sends back base64 encoded "Username" request
C: <-- should outlook send base64 encoded username? it doesnt
S: 334 UGFzc3dvcmQ= <-- server sends back base64 encoded "Password" prompt
C: <-- should outlook should send base64 encoded password?

outlook just seems to send carraige returns when it should be sending the
login details.

Im really not sure where the problems lie. any ideas?

These are the only two clients i've tried so far, does anyone know of any
other windows/mac clients that support asmtp?

Thanks
Paul Kelly
