I'm unhappy about making too many different cases. If you had

host_accept = !*.b.c

and it was working fine, and you changed it to

host_accept = a.b.c : !*.b.c

you'd get a subtle change of effect. Likewise if you went from the
second to the first, you'd get an effect not unlike the one that trapped
you and started this thread.

However, I'm not totally inflexible. If enough people think it would be
good idea, I might be persuaded to change the rules so that if a host is
not in the list at all, it is *never* accepted. This is an uncomplicated
rule. It would mean that a negative item as the last item in a list
would have no effect.

So, what do people think? Send me your "votes".
