Is the bottle-neck on incoming or outgoing mail ?
Assuming that you aren't delivering via pipes I wouldn't have expected
CPU to be the problem. Disk performance would be my guess at the first
bottleneck.

Of course a second CPU on an existing multi-processor motherboard
might be cheaper than a RAID controller or array.

(I'm running exim on a 40MHz Sun IPX with 64Mb RAM and 10Mb ethernet
that also provides interactive service and the machine still keeps
up with our mail, so I'm not well qualified to comment.)
