My personal opinion is that making complex systems depend on one another
significantly increases the chances of you creating an error that takes
down all your services rather than just one at a time....

So making exim work with mysql means that you lose mail service when
either your exim or your mysql machines/software go down - which probably
multiplies mail down time by a factor of 3 (2 systems + extra complexity).
I *like* semi-autonomous systems which have no tight dependancies on other
systems.
