Looks like they are behaving very badly. I have had only the most limited
expirience with SMTP/smap. It is basically an SMTP front end to sit on
a firewall or "secure" site. It then passes stuff off to the real MTA on
the host (sendmail in the instance that I know).

It is used by some sites because it has been certified "secure" by various
authorities. Until very recently, there was no way to stop it from being
an open relay.
