What version of GCC are you using (gcc 2.8.1 handled this fine on my O2)?
Try compiling with the Irix 6.3 native compiler (MIPSpro 7.1); I had
compilation problems on my Irix 5.3 Iris R3000, but switching from 'gcc' to
the native compiler solved that.
