[EXIM] hitching post?

Mail that's aliased or forwarded goes OK. mail that's destined for the
local machine gets bounced with this:

  wo@???:
    Permission denied:
    creating lock file hitching post /var/spool/mail/wo.lock.fserver.harmanhvs.com.3587e0da.00003288:
    retry timeout exceeded

/var/spool/mail if owned by root, group mail, and permissions 775.

Any suggestions?
