On most systems the actual sendmail binary is in /usr/sbin. The
/usr/lib/sendmail is usually a symbolic link for those programs that have
that path hard coded

Andrew, try changing all the sendmail symbolic links to point to the exim
binary and rename the sendmail binary, not the symbolic link to it. Try
using this command to catch most of the symbolic links:

whereis sendmail
