I just recieved the following. I checked and indeed exim loses the fact
that it's recieved a helo line after the . following the data. Is this a
bug? It seems to only happen when I have helo_verify set.

Dear Postmaster,
While monitoring Linux mailinglist relaying I noticed
that your mailer -- Exim 1.80 -- behaves in weird, and
in fact incorrect manner.
Namely it resets its idea of "state" a bit too far
at "dot" phase. Essentially as: (Somewhat abbreviated)
<< EHLO ....
<< MAIL FROM ..
<< RCPT TO ,,
<< DATA
<< . (all fine until now)
<< MAIL FROM ...
>> 550 HELO or EHLO is required...
I won't now check how my outbound smtp channel will react
on that -- it might reject all recipients of the message
at your site when receiving that "550"...
An excuse for Exim to behave like this is that very rare
MTAs need, and are able to pipe multiple messages into same
SMTP-session, thus testing the facility may have been somewhat
sloppy. Mine is one of those that take SMTP protocol to the
limit..
