>From bitter experience, this is because people hard code the names

of machines in places you wouldn't like to know about. One of our
mail clusters was consistently getting more mail than the other,
and it turned out to be a larger leased line customer with one of
the management interface names hard-coded.

Ideally, one would choose a correct naming scheme in the first
place and try not to let users know about anything else. But alas,
they /still/ seem to get it confused.
