I'm reposting this message because it failed to get delivered to quite a
lot of addresses on the exim-users list. The original contained non-7-bit
characters in one of the headers, and some picky mailers and the cyrus
local delivery system barfed at it. I have removed the offending
"In-Reply-To" header. It was

In-Reply-To: <Pin/??4L.3.96.970624092549.397F-100/??4taurus.cus.cam.ac.uk> from Philip Hazel at "Jun 24, 97 09:30:48 am"

where each pair of ?? was actually two characters with hex values F7 and D4,
respectively.

I run a majordomo digest that's compiled from Usenet articles (an outgoing
newsfeed goes to a news-mail gate into majordomo). Every so often I get
a digest truncated, and what it's been is the original article had a
single '.' in the first column all by itself.

It doesn't seem to be truncated across the board (they're generated on
a machine running exim 1.59), but whenever it happens I get 3-4 people
complain about it. You might check to see that all the mailers involved
at your site and on the way out are "doing the right thing" regarding
escaping periods.
