It *definitely* looks to me as though the actual timeout for an ident
query is going to be the connect timeout if the queried host does not
respond at all (not even with a refused) to ident queries.
Could someone with a PC (or other system that ignores connections to
non-existant ports (not a Mac - they do it right)), try telnet-ing to
the SMTP port of an exim system which has ident on and see what
happens.
I think the delay to getting the initial message will be around 2
minutes plus rather than the stated 30 second timeout.
