ah, yes. but my problem wasn't quite what I thought it was, logging
some parameters to my /usr/sbin/sendmail:

-i ph10@???, Neal.Becker@???, exim-users@???

although, what I said about real sendmail V8 accepting the recipients
without spaces was true also.
