It is unclear whether when you say "lowest MX" you mean to *dynamically*
determine the lowest (best) MX at connection time, or to in advance
manually examine the MX RRset, and statically configure one of the MX
hosts (perhaps the lowest/best) as the dedicated gateway for that
destination.
Jeremy indicated that dynamic filtering of the MX RRs might be tricky
(though if there's a user-configurable connection attempt count limit in
Exim that could be set to "1", then Exim will only try one MX host, and
it will be the lowest one for which DNS A/AAAA record lookups succeed).
Otherwise, indeed you'd need to sort and filter the MX RRset, and that's
noticeably more complicated.
But I rather expect that a static choice of "lowest MX" should be easy.
