TL;DR: 1003 commits after afaf5a50b058 and 1002 commits after f1e494e0021f
it has been observed on many different systems (at least Debian 11, Debian 12,
Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04), and Ubuntu 24.04's release of exim4 is based on
exim4-4.97 which is tagged to git diff 107077d7fd67,
$ git rev-list --count afaf5a50b058..107077d7fd67
1003
$ git rev-list --count f1e494e0021f..107077d7fd67
1002
here is how the error looks on Ubuntu 24.04 to Gmail on gnutls:
