I agree, and think it was wrong to dismiss the bug out of hand.

There seems to be a dislike of configuration options:
more to code, more to go wrong, more to test and more to document.

However the real point is that since Jeremy is practically the only one
developing exim, he is the one who gets to decide what work he will do.

I could possibly (not saying thst I will) do something about this
particular bug, but I don't yet know what.

Doing it right is not too hard; doing something that works when the
other side is behaving in ways that suit themselves is harder, and
clearly explaining what you are doing in the documentation is a lot of
effort.
