FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE here.
Using my Makefile for 4.97.1, the compile fails too early with:
```
root@gw:/usr/local/SRC/Exim/exim-4.98-RC0 # make
/bin/sh scripts/source_checks
>>> Creating links to source files...
>>> Creating lookups/Makefile for building dynamic modules
>>> New Makefile & lookups/Makefile installed
>>> Use "make makefile" if you need to force rebuilding of the makefile
/bin/sh ../scripts/Configure-os.c
ccache clang -g -O0 buildconfig.c
/bin/sh ../scripts/Configure-config.h "make"
`buildconfig' is up to date.
Building configuration file config.h
>>> config.h built
/bin/sh ../scripts/Configure-os.h
ccache clang -g -O0 -DMACRO_PREDEF macro_predef.c
In an Internet failure case, the #1 suspect is a constant: DNS.
"Oh, the cruft.", egrep -v '^$|^.*#' ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ :-)
