hosts_try_fastopen = !*.l.google.com
in the smtp transport, despite that being totally bogus given the
symptoms and protocol definitions involved.
If that doesn't help, other things to try disabling include
- chunking
- pipelining
- ipv6 (unlikely, given this was an ipv4 conn)
