Sorry, this was my bad!

I actually had two smtp transports. Messages still in queue over a certain age
were routed to a secondary smtp transport with esmtp disabled and higher
timeouts, to help delivery to problematic servers. Over the years I have
somehow ended up with the primary smtp transport having an interface setting
but not the secondary smtp transport. Quite logically this resulted in retry
hints being set with an interface, but if actual delivery was handled by the
second transport the expunging did not match.

My sincerest apologies for any trouble I have caused.
