My first reaction to this is AARRGGHH!
I am reluctant to think about using fts_open() because it won't be available
everywhere, so it would introduce yet more alternative configuration issues.
There is already some system-specific code for directory scanning; there may be
some other way of dealing with this. It has taken over two decades for this
issue to be noticed, so I don't think it's an emergency. I will work on it in
due course.
