There currently doesn’t seem to be a way to tell the client “an internal error
happened” while logging the details of the error to Exim’s log.

It would be great if readsocket allowed something like:

${readsocket \
{/path/to/socket} \
{hi there\n} \
{3s} \
{\n} \
{${perl{log_error_and_say_internal}{$lasterror}}} \
}
