Oh indeed yes. My xterm is set to UTF-8 mode.

It's more complicated than that because pcre2test also has to handle UTF-16 and
UTF-32 internally (and indeed non-UTF 16-bit and 32-bit data) so that it can
test the 16-bit and 32-bit libraries. But I agree with your last point - as
long as pcre2test is able to do all the necessary testing, I see no reason to
add additional capabilities.
