PCRE1 won't go away, but the developers have moved on (and only have so much
time). PCRE2 has had a lot of code refactoring and code auditing as well
general development which has improved its Perl compatibility. This is all free
software, of course. You are free to take PCRE1 and modify it if you want to.
But if you are using only the POSIX interface, that is the unchanged in PCRE2
(though it has had bugs fixed, if I recall correctly).
