Yes, your thoughts are correct, you need a way of authentication and
authorization.

Authentication can be provided by

    - IP address (unsafe and not possible in your situation)
    - SMTP AUTH (username, password) sent by the client to the server
    - TLS client certificate sent by the client to the server


Authorization is simple, as probable you will accept all authenticated
users/clients.

Exim provides means for all three types of authentication. If you use
SMTP AUTH or TLS client certificates depends on the capabilities of your
local (road warrior) system.
