Bug reporter chiming in here...
I have tested the (current) patch from Wofgang, and (fuzzily) applied the
first hunk of the addendum in comment 29 to my copy of exim-4.93.tar.gz
Happy to report/confirm that Exim now passes my test case without issue.
I tested the case from comment 25, and that now passes as well.
Interesting that this bug is more involved than I had assumed.
