gsasl looks like an easier-to-use library; it supports -SHA-1 & -PLUS as of the
current 1.8.0 release, and -SHA-256 is on the way. Lacking an independent
implementation it won't be possible to test it against anything but itself, so
we'll only have limited confidence in it.
