And it totally contradicts the Perl documentation, in particular, this
sentence:

Note that if this operator is used and NOT inside of an alternation
then it acts exactly like the "(*PRUNE)" operator.

But it doesn't.

Let's see what the Perl maintainers' reaction to my bug report is.
