I found the reason for this helo validation failure. I added a while ago this
line:
dns_ipv4_lookup = *.freenet.de
to the exim.conf because there was a issue with the remote MTAs of that
provider making forward-confirmed reverse DNS checks which failed with the
IPv6 addresses that where used by exim from our site.
While for outgoing mail dns_ipv4_lookup can be helpful I think for helo
verification dns_ipv4_lookup needs to be ignored because we are not able to
influence if a certain remote site uses v6 or v4 to deliver mail to us.
